The 2024 excavation training for students of the School of Specialization in Architectural and Landscape Heritage at Sapienza University of Rome has come to a close. The campaign took place from September 16 to 27, 2024, at the medieval site of Leopoli-Cencelle, in the municipality of Tarquinia.
The activity, an integral part of the Methods and Techniques of Archaeological Research course led by Professors Lia Barelli and Maria Romana Picuti, was carried out this year in collaboration with Professor Giorgia Annoscia and Dr. Flora Miele, under the Excavation Permit held by the Chair of Medieval Archaeology of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, currently held by Professor Annoscia.
The investigations focused on the area immediately west of the ecclesiastical building, with the aim of reconstructing the topographical relationships among various sectors of this part of the city. This area is characterized by the presence of structures associated with civil authority, dating back to the communal era, as well as religious authority, represented by the imposing church of Santa Maria.
The students' work concentrated on a paved open area adjacent to the basalt-paved road identified in previous years, and on a still-excavated building that revealed multiple construction phases and architectural modifications. During the campaign, the collapse layers of the roof and walls were removed.
The participating students were:
Bianca di Giorgio, Gianmarco Laterza, Lorella Palumbo, Beatrice Sacco, Silvia Sanfilippo, Francesco Vinciguerra.
